Outfit 30/91: Sweatshirt, Denim Skirt, Ahnu Shoes

Sweatshirt, denim skirt, and Ahnu shoes.

This fall, I am loving red lipsticks. How about you? The first problem is finding the right shades - how are there a million versions of red? But trying different types is also the fun part.

The second problem is that my kids' faces end up looking bruised and I'm horrified and stumped for a split second! What happened?? Oh, it's just lipstick. Yeah, I kiss them all the time. If I don't do it enough, my little boy will smoosh his face against my lips, wrap his arms around my head, and hold on for a while, giggling like mad.

Do you have any favorite red lipsticks?

Outfit 29/91: Maroon Tee, Jeans, and Birkenstocks

Maroon tee, jeans, and Birkenstocks.

After four weeks of living with a capsule wardrobe, I feel good about it. I don't feel like I'm wearing the same things more than I would like. I don't feel like I'm deprived of anything. I still love looking in my closet and only seeing things that I know fit me today. I'm never just settling for some old, loose t-shirt and then feeling slobby. I feel more like my old self, which is a nice feeling.

Since my fall capsule was so much fun to put together, I'm already thinking about what will go in to my winter capsule. Plus, I'd love to have it finished before December 1st, instead of lagging behind like I did this season. I wonder if I will be sick of my fall clothes and want to replace most of them, or if I'll roll many of them into the winter season.

Short-sleeved shirts will be swapped with long-sleeved shirts. More sweaters will be added. I'd love to find a great sweater dress! Overall, I think I will only want to buy a few pieces, since I already have a lot of winter things that I like.

There's plenty of time to figure it all out.

Outfit 28/91: V-Neck Shirt, Boyfriend Crops, Sandals

Jersey v-neck shirt, boyfriend crops, and sandals. Usually I wear these jeans cuffed, but it turns out, I like the way they look unrolled, too. That's a great way to expand a capsule wardrobe: pants that can have two different looks.

Fall Capsule Wardrobe Updates

Update time! I've made some changes and filled some gaps, so let's take a look at what I have to wear now:

Tops

Fall Capsule Tops

My style is very casual, and my lifestyle requires clothes with durability, freedom of movement, and stain-resistance. I spend most of my time with my two little kids, playing, running errands, attending kids' activities, and meeting friends. Kids wipe food on their parents, and the dirt from their shoes, and whatever else they touch. I don't want any everyday clothes that need special washing (or dry cleaning!) or fussing. Ironing must be kept to a minimum - I just don't want to spend time on that.

My two main "uniforms" for fall are:

1) Graphic tees + jeans + sneakers

and

2) Cozy sweaters + jeans + boots

I think I've got those covered!

Pastel biker jacketI'm trying something new this fall with a faux leather jacket. I hope the zippers won't end up scratching my little boy while I carry him around, and I think he'll like practicing his zipping skills. I ordered this pink jacket from Mangoand it was on backorder so it took over three weeks to arrive... and after all the anticipation, it was too big! I had to send it back. I still love the idea of a pink biker jacket, but I'm not sure I'll reorder since...

I found this grey one for less than $45! and it fits just right and is very soft. It's a tiny bit longer than the pink one, which I found to be more flattering on me. Here is its link. I also love the color. This season I'm wearing a lot of grey, so it fits right in.

I tried to get a good mixture of short sleeves, long sleeves, super-casual, and a little bit nicer tops. I'm loving the selection so far.

Bottoms & Dresses

Fall Capsule Bottoms & Dresses

In this category, I still have two unfinished projects. I haven't put the waistband on that grey skirt yet. Maybe this weekend! It shouldn't take too long, once I decide to just do it.

I'm also making a dress somewhat similar to the striped one shown above. I've been wanting a black and white t-shirt dress or sweater dress or tunic, but I have not found the right thing. So I'm making my own, out of some black and white (not striped) jersey fabric. I've started sewing it, but it needs a lot of fitting and finishing. Again, it shouldn't take too long to finish, if Jason keeps the kids busy for an afternoon this weekend (sometimes easier said than done).

I included a pair of jersey leggings to wear under my in-process dress and maybe with long sweaters. The rest of my pants are jeans. As noted, I'm casual.

Shoes

Fall Capsule Shoes

I'm still wearing those sandals on warm days, so I'm glad to have them in my capsule. So far I'm happy with this variety of shoes. Two pairs are currently missing - my chevron Vans were a little too big so I had to send them back to Zappos (and now they're sold out in my size, but I found them on the Vans website).

I don't have the charcoal boots yet, but I plan to get them as soon as I have the money. I'm stalking them on Amazon and the price is varying wildly, so I'll hope to see the lowest price again. Have you used an Amazon tracking app? There are several different apps, and their whole function is to watch the prices of your chosen items and tell you when it drops to the level you've specified. I'm trying out two different ones to watch those boots.

What do you think? Is anything missing?

Outfit 26/91: Grey Chambray Shirt, Grey Jeggings, Toms Boots

Grey chambray shirt, grey jeggings, and Toms boots.

This is a cozy fall outfit! Have you been enjoying any fall traditions yet? I love pumpkin spice coffees, going on walks to see the neighborhood trees changing colors, choosing pretty leaves to glue on paper with my kids, and baking bread. I also love Halloween! The kids are super excited to decorate pumpkins, so we already picked some up. We are loving fall.

Outfit 25/91: Typewriter Tee, Grey Jeans, Vans Chukkas

Typewriter tee, Grey jeans, and Vans chukka boots.

My 3-year old keeps trying to figure out what's on my shirt. "Is it a phone?" She has never seen a typewriter. Maybe we should visit an antique store sometime soon (just to look!). I know I had an old typewriter at one time - I used to use it to write a zine! But it was heavy and big to move, and I used to move every year or two. At some point, it must have been left behind.

The sentimental part of me sometimes feels a twinge of regret over cool old stuff that I used to have, but the minimizer knows: I haven't even thought of that old typewriter for more than 10 years, and I haven't ever missed it. I'm so glad I didn't drag it with me from state to state and apartment to townhome to house.

I have very rarely regretted getting rid of anything. That's a good thing to remember when I'm decluttering!

Fall Capsule Update

Tops

Fall Capsule Tops

Bottoms & Dresses

Fall Capsule Bottoms & Dresses

Shoes

Fall Capsule Shoes

Here is my updated fall capsule wardrobe. I removed a couple shirts that were damaged and two that I decided to donate for being unflattering. One pair of jeans is now too big, so I set them aside for gardening or other messy jobs when comfortable jeans are really useful.

There were a few empty spots in my wardrobe when September began, and I filled those in (mostly - I still have to sew a bit more!) I'll tell you more about each category as the week goes on, but I thought it might be fun to see the whole set in one post (since you couldn't be here with me when I laid out all the clothes on my bed!)

It's interesting to see them all at once and get a sense of the color scheme and the shapes. I have a lot of grey in this wardrobe, but I think there's enough color mixed in to keep it fun. There are a lot of short-sleeved shirts, but I think I included enough layering pieces to make them work as it gets colder.

Are you making any updates as the season goes on?

Outfit 22/91: Puffy Shirt, Grey Cardigan, Dark Grey Jeans, Frye Boots

Puffy shirt, grey cardigan, dark grey jeans, and Frye boots.
Layering is working really well right now. This morning it was cold and rainy, but now the sun is out and it feels nicely warm outside. It's easy to adapt to the changing weather if you have a sweater or sweatshirt to add or remove.
While I loved this puffy shirt throughout the summer, I now feel like it's not very flattering on me. I think a different silhouette would be more to my liking, so I'm going to donate that shirt and replace it with something else.
Do you remember that I already had a few holes in my wardrobe? I've finally received the items that I chose to fill those. I also have a few other things to remove (like that puffy shirt, a shirt that got stained, and one that has paint on it). Last night I dug through my stored clothes and found replacements for the damaged items. I laid out my updated capsule on my bed (that was fun!) and made my final decisions on what to include. I am finishing up the photos to share with you.

Outfit 21/91: White T-Shirt, Grey Jeggings, and Frye Boots

White t-shirt, grey jeggings, and Frye boots.

You may recall that I had some empty slots to fill in my fall capsule wardrobe. I've received a few things that I ordered for those slots. I also have a few items to remove: a pair of jeans that is now too big, a stained shirt, etc.... I think I can replace those with things from storage. I will be sharing the latest version of my fall capsule this week.

Oufit 19/91 Tank Top, Black Skinny Jeans, Sandals

Tank top, black skinny jeans, and sandals.

It's hot again here! September is such a transitional month, requiring summer clothes, fall clothes, and sometimes even winter clothes. I'm glad I have a tank top, short sleeved shirts, above-the-knee skirts, and a pair of shorts in my capsule wardrobe for days like these.

In October and November, I can still layer the tank top under sweaters. I will be able to wear leggings or tights under the skirts to use them when it's cold out. I think it will work okay.

Outfit 17/91: Myrtle dress (pattern by Colette) & Frye boots

Cowl neck dress + Frye boots (and cat).

I finished sewing my new dress! I used a pattern from Colette Patterns. It's called Myrtle and they recently had a sewalong, where a teacher posts instructions and photos on a blog and you can make your dress along with her (plus ask questions).

The teacher also shared detailed instructions on making some fitting adjustments, which I followed. It is great to learn more sewing techniques to really make clothes that are perfect for me. When I make it myself, I can choose the fabric, style, fit, length - everything!

Do you make any of your own clothes? It's fun and feels like a great accomplishment! I hope to continue to improve my skills and learn more about choosing the right fabrics.

I love watching Project Runway and especially love it when the designers buy the wrong kind of fabric! I get to learn from their mistakes instead of my own.

Outfit 16/91: Puffy Shirt, Denim Skirt & Sandals

Puffy shirt, denim skirt and sandals.  "Puffy shirt" makes me think of that Seinfeld episode and gives me a little laugh. My shirt looks nothing like Jerry's flouncy pirate shirt, but it's a little puffy.

Outfit 15/91 Do You Mix Black with Brown?

T-shirt, black jeggings, boots. I'm still not 100% comfortable mixing brown boots and black jeans, but I'll give it a shot. When I was young, it was a huge faux pas to wear black with brown or blue. The rules have changed!

I was excited a few years ago when grey + brown started showing up in fashion magazines. That rule was easy for me to throw out. I still feel like black looks strange with dark brown, but I think I can adjust to the combo in today's outfit.

The great thing about being able to mix all the neutrals is it expands the options within a capsule wardrobe!

Do you wear brown with black? How about grey and brown?

Outfit 14/91

Navy shirt, cropped jeans, and Converse. After two weeks of dressing with my capsule wardrobe, it still feels easy and enjoyable to get dressed each day.

Today I noticed how nice it is that even my workout clothes and lounge clothes all fit right now. I removed all the clothes that don't currently fit - putting some in a box in the closet and donating some. (Those clothes are not included in my 40-item capsule wardrobe, but I am trying to apply the same strategies to remove everything that doesn't work, or that I don't like, or that I just don't use for any reason.) Now to sort through the rest of the house!

Outfit 13/91 Summer Made a Comeback

Tank top, jean skirt, and Converse. Today it warmed up again! I'm so glad; I'm not ready to say goodbye to summer quite yet.

Have you seen those predictions that this winter is supposed to be extremely cold and snowy? The snow might be fun - lots of snowmen, snow angels, snowball fights, and sledding. But not yet!

Outfit 12/91 Casual Friday

Long-sleeved t-shirt, jeans, Converse. It's Casual Friday! Ha ha, almost every day is casual at my house.

It's so cold out this morning, I can see my breath. I'm looking forward to the warmer weather this weekend.

Outfit 11/91 Chilly Day!

Tank top, cardigan, light grey jeans, Converse. Today is like pre-winter here! It's cold and drizzly and we are expecting a little snow overnight. I'm so glad to see more 80-degree days in the forecast. I'm not ready for consistent cold days yet.

Outift 9/91 + Saving Time Getting Dressed

Jersey dress and sandals.

Nine days into this experiment, I can really tell a difference in how much time I spend deciding what to wear. I don't have to try anything on first or debate between a lot of options. Whatever I choose from my capsule wardrobe fits as I expect and is ready to wear. It feels good, and it's comforting to know that all those clothes are right for me right now.

There's a long time to go in this season and with this wardrobe, but I don't feel bored yet. I also still have several items to add to my capsule, so that will mix things up when they arrive or are finished being sewn. So far, so good.

Outfit 8/91

Hooded t-shirt, jean skirt, Converse. This is the type of outfit I wore a lot in high school, and I still like it. I also love to buy tiny Converse for my kids, while my husband - the skater man - always buys them Vans.

Outfit 7/91

Navy shirt, jean skirt, and Ahnu slip-on flats. I'm loving this time of year! It's still warm enough to feel like summer some days, but we're getting cooler days and chilly nights. A few trees in our neighborhood are starting to change color. Fall is coming - but not too quickly.

Outfit 5/91 It's cool enough for jeans!

Black t-shirt, jeans, and Ahnu slip-ons. It's a cool day today, with a predicted high of only 65 degrees. It's a perfect day for jeans.

Outfit 4/91

T-shirt, cropped boyfriend jeans, and Birkenstock oxfords.

I'm only a few days into this wardrobe experiment, but so far it's really easy. I realized that I've been wearing a limited wardrobe for a long time anyway, even though I wasn't really wanting to. For the past 4.5 years, I've either been pregnant, post-partum, or post-post-partum. I haven't been my regular shape or size for a long time, and I didn't have a large wardrobe for any of those other sizes or shapes.

Even when everything in the closet fits, it seems that most people wear their favorites most of the time. Have you ever tried this? Turn all your clothes hangers backwards. After you wear an article of clothing, turn its hanger around the right way. Then you see which clothes you really wear over a certain period of time. The experiment could help you decide which clothes to get rid of, or could just be interesting to try. It might also help you figure out your style - if you're not using any of a certain type of clothing (flowy bohemian shirts & skirts, say), maybe that isn't your style now. So don't buy more, no matter how cute they are. You know you won't really wear them.

I know I'm not very drawn to loose, flowy tops right now since they feel like maternity clothes to me! I think I'll come back around to them after a while, but for now I'll just enjoy them on other people.

Outfit 3/91 + Wearing and Laundering Clothes A Lot

T-shirt, shorts, and sandals. There's only one pair of shorts in my fall wardrobe, and it's still hot here, so I'll be using them a lot. That means washing them a lot, but I think that will work out fine. With two little kids, I do laundry almost every day, so I can add my clothes to theirs (plus all the washcloths and towels from cleaning up after every meal and snack and bath and art project).

If those shorts get worn out from so much wear and laundering, that's okay. It will be easy to replace them next spring or summer in the size, style, and color that I like then. Clothes go out of style and tastes change, so there's not much point in trying to "save" clothes for later - at least not simple, inexpensive, mass-produced things. Vintage clothes or other special or valuable clothes might deserve to be reserved for special occasions.

And please don't think I mistreat my clothes - I don't. I'm just not worried about wearing out my everyday, ordinary stuff by wearing it a lot and laundering it often.

Outfit 2/91

White shirt, jean skirt, and sandals. So far, this is really easy. I wonder when the novelty will wear off and I will miss my other clothes. Maybe I won't! (I think I might miss my shoes.)

Outfit 1/91

First outfit! Tank top, shorts, and sandals. It's still summertime here - during the day, anyway. It was only 60 degrees when I got up this morning. This time of year is great for sleeping with the windows open, getting a little chilly, and staying in bed a little longer in the morning since it's cold out from under the blanket. With little kids, I don't really get to sleep too late, but I try!

Fall Capsule: Bottoms and Dresses

These are my Fall Capsule bottoms and dresses. Sheesh, they don't look very exciting. The good thing about plain pants is it's easy to wear them with a lot of different tops.

Fall Capsule: Bottoms and Dresses

I only included one pair of shorts, and it's still hot here! But I have two pairs of cropped boyfriend jeans, plus a denim skirt. Hopefully those will keep me cool until the weather changes. October and November are unlikely to be hot enough for shorts.

I have three things to add to this section of the capsule wardrobe: a dress and two skirts. I am in the process of making them.

These two skirts need new waistbands. I made them with fold-over waists initially, but this fabric does not stretch back very well, so they got saggy right away - just from trying them on. I took off those waistbands and will use that wide elastic shown in the photo instead.

I'm making this dress using a Colette pattern called Myrtle. I still need to sew the skirt together (easy) and then put in the elastic waist (something new for me to learn).

Hopefully these will be wearable in a few days and I can add them to my nearly empty gloriously clean and simple closet!

These three pieces will add some color to my wardrobe. I can also add accessories to change things up. I haven't been wearing much jewelry or other accessories for a few years now. Maybe now that I don't have to waste time trying on clothes to see if anything fits, I can use that time to pick out jewelry. I'm really out of the habit, but it seems kind of fun to put that extra effort into my appearance again.
