Outfits 28 & 29/30


28/30: Jersey dress and espadrilles. This dress is a few years old, but Boden keeps making them in different patterns each year. They're so easy to wear, they don't wrinkle, and they don't cling or show off bumps or underwear lines. That's pretty much perfect.


29/30: Navy striped t-shirt, grey shorts, and orange Converse. Here's a twist on my uniform of jeans and a t-shirt, with a slightly different silhouette. Simple, but good.

Yikes, you guys. I still haven't figured out my capsule wardrobe for the next couple months. I think I'll go work on it right now. I'll try to time it so I can tell you how long it takes me! I bet it will go much faster than my previous capsules. I don't plan on buying anything, so I don't have to research or shop. I bought two sweaters and two pairs of shoes (am I forgetting anything?) about a month ago and I think I have everything I need. What a great feeling! Shopping, comparing and debating what to buy can use up as much time as you have, so it's great to cut out that step this time.

Wow, I only have a few days left with my winter + spring capsule. I'd better figure out what I want to include in my spring capsule. So far, I've liked most of what I chose as my spring extras. I did get rid of the grey button-down shirt because it was a little too short and it had a shiny spot on the back (maybe from leaving a hot iron in one place for too long?) 

I think I can figure it out on Wednesday. I find it really interesting that I'm putting it off until the last minute. When I first started using capsule wardrobes, it felt like it needed SO much planning and deciding, and it already feels normal to dress this way. It's been seven months since I started wearing my first capsule, if you're curious. It didn't take long!

Outfits 23 & 24/30

Today we got the kids some new pajamas since their old ones are showing a lot of belly, ankles, and wrists. The thing that's relevant to this blog is that I immediately sorted through my daughter's drawers and removed the pjs and other clothes that are too small. I still need to go through my son's drawers - he slowed me down by jumping on me, yelling, "I'm Super Heroes!" and taking clothes out of drawers after I just folded them and put them away. Ah, two-year olds. So cute, and so inefficient. 

I like the idea of keeping a steady number of clothes - if you need a new thing, get rid of the old thing that isn't right. If you need the replacement, the original thing isn't good enough to keep.

Outfit 22/30: Grey Tunic, Leggings & Moccasins


Today I got to meet my friend's new baby and he is so cute and squirmy and warm. He smells just like a baby and has perfect little bitty fingers that like to hold on to other people's fingers. I'm so happy for my friend and her family! And I am so happy with my own, older kids. Yes, I cried a tiny bit when I first saw that baby, but I don't really want another one of my own. It's really nice to be done having babies, too. 

Comparing my life, with a 2-year old and a 4-year old, to my friend's situation with a new baby, I have so much freedom, energy, and time! It makes me feel appreciative of my own situation, and like I should take advantage of it. 

I'm also relieved that I've gotten rid of lots of my baby accoutrements: the high chair, swing, rattles, bottles, pump, burp cloths, baby bath tub, tons of toys and clothes. My friend has all her baby stuff, plus her 2-year old stuff, plus her 5-year old stuff! 

So it's got me thinking again about only keeping the things that we need now. It's a new inspiration to declutter -- maybe it's a good time to go through my craft/sewing/art supplies while I have this attitude.

Outfit 21/30: Blue T-Shirt, Ivory Cardigan, Boyfriend Jeans & Vans


I'm so glad I still have access to my winter capsule since the mornings and evenings have been pretty cool. Having warm layers available is great this time of year, with such big temperature fluctuations. I'm definitely going to repeat this strategy of overlapping my capsules in the fall. 

I guess I better start deciding what I want to wear for the rest of this spring. Soon I should be able to put away my coats and sweaters and start wearing tank tops.

20/30: White tank, black cardigan, jeans, and moccasins.

So I told you I've been getting a bit more sleep at night. I'm averaging seven hours a night now. Getting that much sleep has improved my mood and patience (I still run out sometimes) and I've had more energy and motivation to exercise regularly. That is awesome. I feel so much better in every way when I work out almost every day. I've been lifting medium-heavy weights and I can lift heavier every week. I love seeing results from my efforts and it is so much fun to get stronger! Also, the endorphins make me happier and calmer. Upward Spiral. Each positive change makes it easier to make the next positive change.

I've also been trying to increase my cardio capacity and it is improving, but there's a long way to go to return to my pre-pregnancy fitness level. Now I'm trying to add my yoga habit back in, too. I feel amazing when I get all three of those bases covered. 

If I can get good habits in place for sleep, exercise, and eating, I will be thrilled. I'm working on it, slowly but surely. I keep falling off the wagon, and I'm sure I will many more times, but even a small or temporary improvement is worth the effort. It seems to be a "two steps forward, one step back" situation, so I'm always improving a little bit. My current mindset on establishing good habits: just keep doing it! It's so simple, and it's working for me right now, so I'm sticking with it.

Outfit 17/30: Red Shirtdress, Jeans & Zipper Booties


I know this dress looks kind of neon in this photo, but in real life it is just red. I can remember an outfit I used to wear in high school: a short t-shirt style dress over jeans. It would be so fun to have a photo of me wearing it and compare how I wore this style then versus now. I will have to search through all my old photos and see if I can find any interesting, fun, or embarrassing outfits. How many silhouettes are still favorites? I bet there are some shoes and t-shirts that I would still wear today. I'm sure there are lots of things that I would never wear again!

Outfit 16/30: Grey Striped Sweater, Ladybug Skirt, Zip Booties


I'm so glad I still have my sweaters in my closet, since it was only 33 degrees this morning! The other day I was wearing shorts and now there are a few inches of snow on my deck. Oh Springtime, you are full of surprises. 

The kids and I loved watching the snow all day and even playing outside for about 10 minutes. Violet is getting really good at throwing snowballs! Good thing I still had my winter coat out, too.

Outfits 14 & 15/30


14/30: Striped t-shirt, cropped jeans, and sandals. I wish this shirt were a couple inches longer, so I'm not sure it will be staying with me after this month is over. It's a few years old, from the Gap.



15/30: Black and white striped top, jeans, and zipper booties. I made this top last year and usually like it a lot. Sometimes it feels a little too shapeless, but not today. The jeans and boots have never disappointed me. They'll probably be around for a while.

Outfits 11, 12 & 13/30

Hi all, today I'm sharing my outfits from the weekend and from today. It was a good weekend, including family gardening and a sewing date with my sister (while our kids played together and didn't need us much - sweet!). Today the kids and I spent a lot of time running around outside and they are now sleeping soundly. I hope I will be soon, too. I'm still trying to increase my sleep time each night. Over the past week, I've always gotten at least seven hours each night, so that's a great improvement. My goal is to average eight hours a night, so I've got a ways to go.

The outfits:


11/30: Black and white tank top, kimono shirt, jean shorts & white Converse. I like this kimono shirt. It acts like a cardigan, but it's lightweight and breezy. It feels kind of arty to me, and I'm liking that right now. Could dressing like an artist help me be more creative? It can't hurt.


12/30: Flowered tunic, leggings, and espadrilles. This is super comfortable but looks a little more put-together than a t-shirt and jeans or yoga pants.


13/30: Blue t-shirt, ivory cardigan, boyfriend jeans, and Vans Sk8-his. My uniform! It's still working for me, so I'm still wearing it.

How is your spring going so far? I'm loving the sunshine, flowers, tiny kids at soccer practice, and yard work. We're thinking about getting out kites and riding bikes and just spending more time outside. 

I'm also thinking about spring cleaning and decluttering and I'm ready to sort through my sewing/craft/art stuff. That's probably going to take a while, since I will want to look at everything and set aside piles of things to start a bunch of new projects. It could end up making a huge mess, but I'm going to give it a try.

Weekend Outfits: 4 & 5/30

How was your weekend? (Yes, I know it's Tuesday already.) My weekend clothes are pretty much the same as my weekday clothes - one of the benefits of not working somewhere with a dress code. But, the constant casualness is also one of the results of rarely dressing up to go out on Saturday nights. When I was in high school and in my 20s, I always wanted to go out on the weekends. Now, I'm pretty content to stay in most nights. As my kids get older, I feel a little more pull to get out and socialize, see bands, eat at nicer restaurants, and I'm currently wondering if I could find a way to see David Sedaris perform next month. 

Different activities can call for different wardrobe elements, so I'll be thinking about that as I decide what to include for the rest of spring. This blue sweater could go a lot of places. It's not too fancy for everyday wear, but could look really nice with the right skirt or pants, shoes, purse, and a real watch instead of my fitbit. :)

I've been tracking my sleep, using a fitbit charge HR. It's a pedometer bracelet that you can wear all day and all night (not in the shower). It tracks your heart rate and determines when you are asleep, how many times you were restless, and how many times you were awoken. When my husband took the kids out of town for a weekend, I woke up only once or twice each night. With them at home, I wake up about 15 times a night!

My fitbit is showing that my average amount of sleep is only 6 hours and 55 minutes. I'd like to increase that by a full hour, so that is my goal. I'll go from there to see if I want to try to sleep more than eight hours a night. For now, I think adding one hour would make a big difference for me.

Outfit 1/30: Blue Sweater, Jeans & Riding Boots


Happy April Fool's Day! Did you play any tricks? I just put food coloring in our milk to surprise the kids. They thought that was fun, but I think next year I'll plan ahead and do something bigger. 

I'm so happy with my plan to gradually switch from my winter clothes to my spring clothes! Earlier in the week it was warm - in the 70s, and tomorrow the high is expected to be 41!! We might get six inches of snow. Are you kidding me? I hope all my tulips don't get frozen like last year. Anyway, I'm glad I have clothes available (and feel free to use them) to suit these wild changes in temperature. 

I also think that it's more sustainable for me long-term. It feels a lot more natural to me to switch as the weather changes, rather than forcing myself to wear a certain array of clothes until a particular date. I'll just have to see how this capsule wardrobe experiment evolves for me. So far, so good!
