Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween! Are you wearing a costume this year? I'm not, but I think it might be fun to dress up next year.  I've seen some pretty funny family costumes, so if I get a good idea and my family will agree to it, I might try that next year.

I also love the grey-scale costumes I've seen (you wear all black, grey and white outfits and spray your hair black or grey and put grey or black makeup on all your exposed skin so you look black and white). That wouldn't be good for kids, since I don't want them to rub makeup on everything they touch, but maybe for me and Jason.

In the meantime, here are two outfits with a bit of color:

Striped t-shirt, denim jacket, black skirt and maroon clogs. I chose maroon tights, too, and I like how it looks even though the maroons are different from each other.

Do you have any pins on your jean jacket? There are so many cute ones on Etsy! I have:
The twins from The Shining
Little Edie from Grey Gardens
Smeared Marge
Ruth Bader Ginsberg
Steve Zissou

Grey tank, yellow cardigan, navy cords and grey boots. I like how this yellow sweater really stands out against neutrals.

Have fun if you're trick-or-treating or going to a party tonight!

Three Sweaters, Fall 2015

Hi guys, it's getting to be sweater weather where I live, so my recent outfits are all pretty cozy.

Grey tank, ivory cardigan, ivory cords and sneakers. I wasn't sure about black shoes with these pants, so I did the obvious thing: try it! I think they're fine. If I had lighter colored sneakers in my capsule wardrobe (I'm picturing medium grey), I'd probably choose those instead, but I'm okay with these.

Green sweater, flared jeans and camel boots. This sweater is pretty warm, so I definitely plan to keep wearing it through the winter. I like the silhouette of this outfit, even though I've said that I think big shirts with flared jeans can make too big of an outfit. I think the sweater's drape is what makes it work for me. Even though it's loose at the bottom, it's more fitted in the chest. It would look great with a really long necklace, I think.

Grey tank, grey cardigan, flared jeans and sneakers. It's a fake twin set! Okay, so when I was talking to my husband about higher-waisted jeans, he told me that they make women's butts look weird. I don't want to post a close-up of mine, so I'll just say that I disagree. I think these Madewell jeans are pretty flattering. I like the pocket placement; I'm not ready for the full-on retro of high back pockets. Maybe that's what my husband was picturing?

Boots and Oxfords Outfits, Fall 2015

Hi guys! How was your weekend? Luckily my little boy was only really sick for one day. Phew! It is very draining to take care of, clean up after, and worry about a sick toddler.

On Saturday, we went to our daughter's last soccer game of the season (now we can sleep in on Saturdays, if the kids will let us!). Later, the kids wore their costumes to a small Trunk or Treat. And we planned and got started on a house project, hanging up rows of hooks for our coats instead of piling them all on the coat rack and the banister.

On Sunday I did some healthy cooking for the week, fit in a (sadly) rare workout, and sewed a skirt most of the way. I still have to add the button and button hole, plus hem the skirt. It shouldn't take too long to finish and hopefully I'll be wearing it this week.

And now for my recent outfits:

Navy sweater, red skirt and Frye boots. I feel like there are almost too many different colors in the outfit, but since navy, grey and camel are all neutrals, I think it works.

Clay tank, ivory cardigan, flared jeans and Frye boots. I think the proportions of this outfit are correct. The shorter sweater balances out the wide legs of the jeans. Sometimes a larger top with wide leg jeans can make an outfit seem too big.

Jersey dress, yellow cardigan and Frye boots. I really like the brightness of the yellow against a darker dress, tights, and boots.

Flowered jersey dress, jean jacket and oxfords. I feel kind of weird about the dark tights and lighter shoes, but I see this kind of combo all over Pinterest and think it looks cute on other people. I'm often a slow adopter of new-to-me fashion, so it might take me a little longer to feel completely comfortable with this look.

Boyfriend Jeans x 2

Aww man, my little son is sick. The good news is, the rest of us are fine... so far! I'm hoping he'll be able to eat something after his nap, and while he sleeps, I'll just keep washing towels and sheets and little clothes. Who knows, we might need them all again today.

Grey cardigan, boyfriend jeans and camel boots. This one's kind of fun and different for me. I've never tried cuffed jeans with these boots before. I kind of like it.

Navy sweater, boyfriend jeans and sneakers. This outfit actually got transformed once I saw how the day was going. Easily-washable t-shirts (yes, I've had to change a few times!) have replaced the sweater, and I really don't need a necklace or a big watch today.

Here's to good health! Enjoy it if you've got it. :)

Clay Tank, Plaid Cardigan, Ivory Cords and Clogs

Clay tank top - Everlane
Plaid cardigan - Modcloth
Ivory cords - J. Crew Factory
Maroon clogs - old

So many elements of fall dressing are combined in one outfit: brown, maroon, plaid and corduroy. I just need some pumpkin-based food and I'll be at level Maximum Fall.

Weekend Outfits - October 2015

We had a pretty low-key weekend, which was really nice. We took the kids to Toys R Us for the first time as a reward for staying in their own rooms for three nights straight. Then they were good sports while we shopped for new living room furniture. Hopefully the new couches we chose will last us for a decade (or more!), as opposed to the cheaper stuff we've been buying, which wears out quickly. It's the same idea with clothes: if I can buy some better quality things, hopefully they'll last longer and look great longer.

Denim shirtdress, suede leggings, ankle boots. I'm trying this dress without a belt, and from most angles I don't think it looks like a maternity dress.

Striped t-shirt, boyfriend jeans and sneakers.

Grey tee, ivory cords, tan oxfords. Hmm. This might be a bit top-heavy with the darker color on top. I wonder if darker shoes would help balance it out. A really light-colored shirt might seem too springy to me for a fall outfit. I'll keep trying to figure out how I want to wear these off-white cords.

I hope your week is off to a good start!

White Tops x 2

Woo-hoo! It's Friday! I meant to post yesterday, but I've become hooked on knitting and I used up all my hobby time working on my first sweater. I have two outfits to share, one with white on top and one with ivory.

White button-down shirt from Anthropologie
Flared jeans from J. Crew Factory
Maroon clogs from Olsson

Thanks to my investigations into color theory, I know that pure white is not my best color, but I'm still going to wear this great shirt until it's worn out. In the future, when I have the chance to buy off-white tops instead, I probably will, but I doubt I'll ever completely give up pure white.

Green tank from Old Navy
Ivory cardigan from Modcloth
Flared jeans from J. Crew Factory
Frye boots

So, same jeans with two different looks. I like the silhouette better here. The white shirt and the green tank actually have the same shape - loose fit, curved hems, untucked. But the short, fitted cardigan changes the overall shape of the 2nd outfit. It visually cuts a waistline in the outfit. I think with wide jeans, the shirt should maybe be more fitted, or tucked in, or belted, or have an upper layer that creates the look of a waistline - or be looser and more boho-flowy. A big, long shirt might just make too big of an outfit overall. My white button-down isn't big or long, but it's still not the best styling with these jeans. I'll keep playing around with different combos and see what I like the best.

The Blues x 2

Hiya! I have two mostly-blue outfits to share:

Sweatshirt, boyfriend jeans, and clogs. It's definitely casual, but I think the accessories and shoes make this outfit a bit cuter and worthy of going out in public.

Denim shirtdress and Frye boots. Since it's finally about to cool off here, I'll be wearing this with tights or leggings next time. I can picture it with a big cardigan on top when it gets really cold. It's such a blank slate, ready to go with any belt, shoes, boots, or bag.

Is it cold where you live? Today my car said it was 93 after being parked in the sun for a couple hours! Tomorrow the predicted high is only 69, and I think maybe it will stay fall after that. It's been a great extended summer, and now I'm excited about the cooler temps. How about you?

October Outfits So Far

I have a lot of outfits to share from this month so far. The temperature where I live has been fluctuating between the 60s and 80s. That's pretty fun, since I get to dress in so many different ways. Another thing to love about fall :)

What do you think of my fall wardrobe? I'm happy with my choices so far. Forty pieces of clothing, plus tee shirts and tank tops, plus whatever I sew myself = a lot of choices! I'm sure I won't be bored after only two months with these clothes. A capsule wardrobe definitely doesn't have to feel overly restrictive. If you need five more pieces to feel happy with your wardrobe, add five! It's your wardrobe, so you can decide what to do.

Blue sweatshirt (I made it)
Boyfriend jeans
Maroon clogs

Green tank
Yellow cardigan
Navy cords
Tan oxfords

Ivory sweater
Denim skirt
Tan oxfords

I like the curved hem on this sweater; it makes it just a little different from most of my sweaters.

I added burgundy laces to my shoes to change them up a little bit. They felt a little summery to me with white laces, so I thought I'd try out laces in my favorite fall color instead.

Black and white tunic
Boyfriend jeans
Moccasins

Go Your Own Way tee (Only buy this if you like the Fleetwood Mac song. It will be in your head and everyone's who sees you.)
Denim skirt
Tan Oxfords

Green striped tunic
Leggings
Blue slip-on oxfords

Breton striped tee
Denim skirt
Moccasins

Grey cardigan
Flared jeans
Ankle boots

Ivory sweater
Black skinny jeans
Maroon clogs

Desert tee
Boyfriend jeans
New Balance sneakers

Dark green sweater tunic
Black skinny jeans
Maroon clogs

Green button-down shirt
Flared jeans
Ankle boots

Skirts, Pants and Shoes for Fall 2015

Hi all, I've got the rest of my fall capsule wardrobe to share today. Here are the pants and skirts:
Skirts and Pants Fall 2015

Top row:
Black A-line skirt (no longer available)
Red skirt (no longer available)

Second row:

Bottom row:
Boyfriend jeans from Old Navy

And here are my shoes and boots:

I'm pretty excited about this wardrobe! I'm glad to have it settled, after wearing whatever I wanted during September. It was fun to feel free to wear all my shoes, but more than once I found myself struggling to decide what clothes to wear. A few days, I changed clothes multiple times before leaving the house. What a pain!

I think eventually I'll stop counting how many clothes I have in my closet each season, but I hope I'll always remember how helpful it is to have a smallish wardrobe of clothes that work together and that fit me well and that I love to wear. It makes it easy to feel good about how I look, it's quicker to get dressed, and it's so nice to always wear clothes that I love. I'm still working on getting rid of all the filler from my closet and drawers. After a year of dressing with capsule wardrobes, I hope I can let go of a ton of extras this fall. I know that I don't need the filler clothes -- things that I don't like that much, or that don't fit quite right. I've proven to myself that I can dress just fine without them.

Fall Tops and Dresses 2015

Hi guys! I finally settled on a plan for this fall's wardrobe. I'm using my usual 40 pieces of clothing, plus I can wear any plain t-shirts or tank tops underneath these:

Fall Tops and Dresses

Top row:
Desert t-shirt from Modcloth

Second row:
White button-down from Anthropologie

Third row:

Bottom row:

In addition to adding under-layers, I can wear anything that I sew or knit for myself. I'm working on knitting my first sweater, and hopefully I'll be finished before the end of fall - or at least in time to wear it this winter!

I'll be back tomorrow with the rest of my fall capsule.
